Hi, I’m Kara!
I’m a primary school teacher, mum of two and the creator of Impactful Instruction. I live in Canberra and have spent over ten years teaching across K–6 in NSW and the ACT, including literacy and numeracy intervention.
One of my favourite parts of teaching is watching that light-bulb moment when something clicks for a student. I love using evidence-based practices when I teach, working smarter, not harder in an already demanding career, which is what I aim to bring to the resources I create.
Three years into my teaching career in 2019, I was teaching Year 6 and was inspired by my upper primary students who, some of them, continued to need significant reading support in their final year of primary school. This prompted me to explore the Science of Reading in greater depth, which highlighted gaps in my undergraduate training and led me to pursue further study, completing a Graduate Certificate in Education at ECU specialising in learning difficulties. The knowledge I gained continues to shape my teaching and resource design, with an emphasis on explicit instruction, manageable steps and purposeful practice to build students’ confidence and independence.
I also know how much thought and time goes into preparing a lesson. Between teaching and family life, I understand the value of having resources you can pick up, understand and use without starting from scratch, which are also strongly aligned with the evidence, so you can rely on their quality for a high impact classroom.
Through Impactful Instruction, I create evidence-aligned literacy and numeracy resources for Years 3–6. You’ll find clear models, practical scaffolds and thoughtfully structured activities to support your teaching.
Thanks for being here. I hope you find something that makes your next lesson a little easier to prepare and clearer to teach.
Kara
